With temperatures hitting and going over 100° this week, all we talk about is drinking lots of water on the farm. Heat stress is a serious danger, and one cannot always be aware of it. We have a buddy system at Eatwell in which each person has a co-worker who keeps an eye on him or her for any signs of stress. There are tents in the field where everyone can rest and drink more water in the shade. On Tuesday morning we had a brief refresher course with the entire staff on the dangers of excessive heat. We start work at 6 a.m. and try to finish as soon as possible before the heat really kicks in later in the afternoon.
