These tree were planted last spring. Through the summer the growing shoots were selected and pruned. I try to encourage growth on three or four branches. I pinch back any that are dominate. The aim is to have three nicely spaced branches to selectively prune to now. I prune back the tree drastically to outward growing branches. The goal is to have the frame of the tree very open in the center. An open center allows lots of light and sir to reach the leaves and fruit. This promotes great color on the fruit and reduces the incidence of disease. This is probably the most import pruning in the life of the tree. Setting up the framework of the tree correctly now makes the work later easier and more productive.
