Strawberries

DSC_0863.jpg I love explaining what it takes to grow flavorful produce. Last Sunday on the farm tour we all tasted strawberries that were planted a year ago and new ones planted in August of this year. The taste difference was remarkable. The berries from the new plants tasted just like strawberries you would buy in the store: so-so. The older plants had a rich, deep flavor in comparison. Their wonderful flavor is a result of their well-established, deep roots, which bring up nutrients from the depths of the soil and make them taste delicious. Children know and are very vocal about what they like, and it excites me that they really do understand what we are doing here. When I see them understand the process, it makes all the hard work worthwhile.
