Those of you who have visited the farm this summer have seen the 40-acre field next to us full of tomato plants. Last week harvest began in earnest with their ¼ million dollar harvester. Each of these trucks holds 24 tons of tomatoes that have to make the short trip to the Campbell’s Soup cannery just east of Dixon. This field will yield about 80 truckloads. The tomatoes are made into a paste concentrate for soup. This method of harvesting is quite different from the carefully hand-picked tomatoes in your CSA boxes.
