Strawberry Plants
The delicious fruit that we will all enjoy next year has been planted and is all growing nicely. The plants (crowns) were harvested in January from nursery beds. They were then frozen and stored in a very large freezer warehouse in Turlock. Planting them through this woven plastic fabric has worked well for us the last two seasons. The fabric we used this year was taken from strawberries planted two years ago. We hope to be able to use each sheet for 10 years. Water and rain pass through the fabric, but weeds are blocked. There is only a little hand weeding around the planting hole. Our crop has increased substantially as has the quality during hot weather as many of you have seen this summer. In the past the fruit had been very fragile. The berries now are smaller, but solid and very tasty.
