My dad has spent the last four days putting together four new sets of nest boxes. The young flocks beginning to lay eggs currently only have four sets of ten boxes per house. That means that forty nest boxes serve 900 chickens. That is not enough, so to start, we are putting twenty more in each of the two pullet houses. Each set of ten costs $350, so I have been buying them as we have the cash. Ultimately, we would like to have eighty new nests in all of our chicken houses, which, when multiplied by the six houses we have, means almost $17,000 of expenses in nest boxes alone.
The nest boxes are front rollouts: when the egg is laid it rolls out of the way and under the roost. The new boxes have a plastic cover to protect the eggs. Agustin and Jaime come along, lift the roosts, and harvest the eggs.
