Now is the time that we prepare beds for the first of the fall plantings. In the greenhouse in Gilroy are Fennel, broccoli, bunched greens, cauliflower and Romanesco. They are ready to plant but we are not. Ramon is cultivating beds that have grown pasture over the winter and had chickens on them this spring. Ricardo is right behind him irrigating. he will apply just enough water to allow Ramon to come back in the next day and cultivate more. This will happen a couple of times then we will make the beds with our bed shaper. This field is high in nutrients but only in its fourth year organic so the soil fauna is not at the level that can consume the pasture quickly. Water and air (cultivation) will help them get going, eating and reproducing.
