Today's Box (July 14th)

Strawberries: These gorgeous fruits are of the Chandler and Seascape varieties and should be eaten soon since we pick them ripe.  To store, leave them in the green basket inside of paper bag in fridge and wash only before consuming.  Please return the baskets to your delivery site so they can be reused.  Enjoy!

Basil:  Some of you asked to be buried in basil , so we are attempting to do just that!  It is a succulent, oh-so-aromatic  herb that adds depth to many a dish and can be made into a tasty pesto  Store in plastic bag in fridge and use soon.

Lavender:  We are sending you a little taste of the season with these beautiful 'Super' lavender blossoms.  The buds are amazing in savory and sweet foods and can be dried to enjoy for months to come.  To dry, hang bunch upside down away from direct sun.  Lovely!

Arugula:  This popular Italian green packs a slight bite with nutty undertones and pairs well with strawberries, goat cheese, nuts, and a vinaigrette.  It is also great sauteed, in pesto, atop a pizza, or in soups.  Store in plastic bag in fridge, rinse, and dry before eating.

Summer Squash:  First of the season!  This is either from the farm or from Riverdog Farm in the Capay Valley and is certified organic.  With a delicate flavor, this summer squash can be quickly sauteed or steamed with just a touch of oil or butter and some fresh herbs.  It also goes well shredded in a salad or baked into bread.  Stores best in plastic bag in fridge and wash before eating.

Tokyo Turnips:  This ancient veggie is one of the earliest to be cultivated and was a staple before the potato.  It is rich in fiber, calcium, and vitamins A and C.  These beauties can be eaten raw or steamed and have a deliciously buttery crunch.  Remove the greens and store in separate plastic bags in fridge and wash before eating.  The turnip greens are amazing sauteed!

Cylindra OR Chiogga Beets:  These pretty root veggies are either long and deep crimson colored or round and candy striped red and white inside.  Don't forget to teat the greens, too- they are extremely good for you and oh-so tasty!  They are wonderful shaved thin on salads or melt-in-your-mouth sweet when roasted.  Store roots separately from greens in different bags in fridge for freshness.

Plums OR Peaches OR Extra Strawberries:   You may receive either plums, peaches or extra strawberries this week.  Our stone fruits had a rough time this year with late season rain and cold, but the plum trees fruited best of all and they are delicious!  To further ripen plums if slightly firm, store in paper bag on the counter for a day or so. There are some peaches in the orchard, but not nearly as many as we should have.  Store ripe fruit in fridge and wash before consuming.

Savoy Cabbage:  The beautiful head of cabbage with it's crinkly leaves, is amazingly sweet with a more delicate flavor than other cabbage varieties.  It is from our friends at Riverdog Farm in the Capay Valley and is certified organic.  It is delicious steamed or stuffed with rice, potatoes, or ground meat.  It is a lovely addition to soups and is great raw in salads or slaws.  Keep in crisper  of fridge and wash before eating.

Onions:  These alliums are great raw in salads or on sandwiches, in omelets, soups, curries, or stir-fries.  They are now maturing and may have some leaves that can be trimmed off.  Wash well and remove bottom quarter-inch before consuming.

Purple Viking Potatoes:  These smooth and creamy-textured spuds are the first of the season and are great for baking or mashing.  They have a gorgeous blue skin and a snow white flesh and taste slightly sweet.  Store in fridge for best keeping and eat the skin for most nutrients. Wash well before eating and enjoy!
