Spring Plantings

DSCF0614.JPG In February we planted Kales, Collards, Parsley and Lettuce. These are doing well. The timing of sowing the seed is critical. It was seeded in Early December so that we would have a large enough plant to put into the beds in late February. The collards are very sensitive to day length change and they got a shortening day length stimulus as they emerged, then the days lengthened this spring. They are programmed to flower if they have grown during shortening days and then the days are longer as they mature. For next year we need to delay the seed sowing by a couple of weeks so that they only experience the lengthening days and do not flower.
