Some of our summer crops have way too much of this grass in their beds. It arrived a couple of years ago in the canal irrigation water and has proven very difficult to eradicate. We have wonderful peppers which were nice and clean of weeds in late july. They now have Johnson grass everywhere. Even the pumpkins and winter squash have it. We do not filter the water that we sprinkle onto these crops so the small weed seeds that are carried in the irrigation water pass through the sprinkler nozzles. Our plan for next year is to buy a large filter system for all our water. This will cost around $12,000 and providing we have the cash available will be well worth it. For those areas where we already have the weed we will have to plant shorter season crops that are cultivated more often. As the pasture year passes around the farm that will take care of most of the weed seeds. We are able to take more time preparing beds now, we pre irrigate them to germinate weeds before we plant. The weed seed comes down the canal from other farmers cleaning out their ditches that are infested with the weed. The weed has some resistance to modern herbicides so it is a big problem for chemical farmers too. For more info...
