Cracking garlic

P9230009.JPG We had an incredible garlic harvest this year. The cool and wet spring was perfect for garlic as it was for potatoes. Unfortunately in the mountains of the Sierra where our seed garlic is grown the harvest was horrible, a failed crop. This has meant that we only were able to purchase 480 out of the 1500 pounds that we need. The garlic seed should arrive cracked and sized, we only buy the large cloves. This year there was not enough crop to run the cracking and sizing machines so we have to do it ourselves.

The balance of the garlic that we need is coming from Bakersfield next week, it will be cracked. It is valley grown which means that it will have more viruses and will not jump out of the ground like the mountain grown does.

The past winter weather continue to effect us. It's called the joy of farming.
