We sow lettuce directly in beds in November several times to make sure we have enough for this time of the year. Unfortunately this year brought us a very short hail storm which took a toll on our lettuce leaves. Spinach was also damaged but that recovered quickly. The lettuce leaves that were 'hit' started to breakdown so we could not sell it. Lettuce starts to grow at very low temperatures (38 F) so it has put on rapid growth. We are now able to pick the lettuce and remove easily any damaged leaves.

You will notice that we are running only three varieties on the bed at this time. We choose ones that do not hold water in their hearts which is important with a winter where we have heavy rains like this one.

I am pleased at the low weed pressure also.
