Orchard Pruning Awaits Us.
We have completed about 20% of the pruning we need to do in the orchard. The first plums will start to bloom in a little over three weeks. With all this rain we cannot get to this work even if we have a dry spell. The orchard floor is waterlogged. Our walking and standing around the tree would compact the soil. Roots do not like compacted soil as it lacks air and biological activity.
So we have to wait until the rain has stopped and the soil dried out sufficiently that we can prune safely.
