Chickens love alfalfa. They eat it with abandon. Rhizobia on the roots of Alfalfa fix nitrogen from the air. Together with the chicken poop this provides great fertility for the crops grow after the alfalfa.
The pasture is sown in November. It is now germinating and Roberto and Ricardo have made the first pass with our brush weeder to remove any seedling weeds between the rows of Alfalfa. Once the crop is established it will smoother out any other weed, we just need to give it a helping hand now.
The chickens will move on to the crop in May.
