Using Our Wheat Crop
Last June we harvested a crop of wheat on 40 acres adjacent to the farm. We stored 60 tons of the crop in these three silos on the farm. The extra 15 tons was cleaned and bagged. It has been sold as flour and seed for a wheat grass company in Santa Rosa.
We have been drawing from one of the silos to feed our chickens on a daily basis, it is now only 1/3 full. We can feed up to 40% of their ration as pure wheat. The crop will last two years in the silos. We bought new silos because we could not rent any nearby. New silos do not have eggs of bugs in them so the crop will stay clean longer.
We do have to make room for this summer crop or build more silos.
