Leeks are a winter harvested crop here at Eatwell Farm. They are planted in the heat of the summer. We plant three time; early July, early August and early September. each time we use the same two varieties and in this way we can have fresh leeks of a fairly uniform size from November through to the end of March when they flower. The young plants are organically grown for us by Headstart Nursery in Watsonville.
Harvesting leeks can be hard work depending on how muddy it is. The roots are cut from the stem, the leaves peeled back until a nice clean white shank is exposed and then they are buched. In the pack house they are washed and cooled ready to place in your boxes.
