San Francisco now diverts 72% of its waste away from the landfill. Some of that ends up here on the farm in the form of great compost. We apply 10 cubic yards of compost over every acre after every crop. We now also add 1,000 of lime to that compost which provides much needed calcium to the soil fauna and the subsequent crops.
Residents and businesses in San Francisco can put their food and green waste into green bins which are transported to a compost facility just south of Dixon. To me this is the ultimate in recycling as in theory the trimmings of vegetables that we send to our customers come back to the farm to fertilize more crops which we send back to them.
