Carbon Sequestration and More…

P4270019
You know you are at Eatwell Farm when you see our 80+ feet tall windbreaks. They are a defining feature of the farm and can be seen for many miles. This is the first row of seven by the irrigation canal that goes along the front of the farm.
These are 10 year old Lombardy Poplars and they work hard for us slowing down the winds that whip through the Sacramento Valley at this and other times throughout the year. High winds combined with warm days suck the moisture out of people and plants alike. None of us like it.
We are surrounded by many field devoid of trees which are just production agriculture and for some they are bare for 8 months of the year. I am not sure how much carbon is sequestered in these trees but I know we are making a contribution to the environment. The other way organic farmers lock up carbon is by building up the organic matter in the soil. When you support ours and/or other organic farms you are doing more that just getting great produce for your money.
The most important thing is that our crops, soil and the people who work here are protected by these trees.
